The Hatchett Herd of Pedigree Dexters is owned by young farmer and young commoner Peter Niccolls. Pete has lived and worked in the New Forest all of his life. He was given his first cow, Daisy, in 1996 by his Grandad and then his first Dexters in September 1997.

Since then Pete has worked hard to increase the size of the herd whilst always ensuring the same high quality of life for all his cows. The cows are reared using traditional grass rearing methods and the cows graze out on the New Forest. In fact, you will often see the herd sunning themselves at Balmer Lawn or strolling past the entrance to The Pig Hotel.

Pete is very hard working, looking after his herd of cows and small flock of sheep in the time when he is not working for the family business, Niccolls Plant Hire. Pete also finds time to help at the local Beaulieu Young Farmers Club and is on the New Forest Young Commoners Committee.

In November 2014 Pete won the New Forest Marque award at the Hampshire Life Food & Drink Awards and in July 2015 Pete won the Young Farmer/Commoner Category in the CLA/National Park awards presented at The New Forest Show.  Pete is a big supporter of local produce and is trying to find ways to incorporate traditional commoning methods of farming in to a thriving modern business. Pete has recently become a Director of the New Forest Marque.

Pete enjoys looking after the cows and believes them to be intelligent animals.  He likes to see them leading a happy life and he then takes pride in seeing the good quality beef being enjoyed by those eating it. Pete likes people to know where their meat has come from and to know that the animal has had a happy, healthy life.
